Automotive QMS
Automotive QMS (Quality Management System) is a systematic process for managing and continually improving an organizations quality to meet customer requirements and enhance customer satisfaction.
QMS helps organization to optimize their efficiency, reduce costs, and increase customer satisfaction. ISO 9001:2015 specificies requirements for a quality management system.
State of the Art
ISO 9001
ISO 9001:2015 is a globally recognized standard for quality management systems. It is based on several key principles that form the foundation of the standard. These principles are often referred to as the "Pillars" of ISO 9001:2015:
Customer focus
Organizations are required to understand their customer’s requirements, delivering products and services that meet their needs, and continually improving the customer experience.
Leadership
Leaders are responsible for establishing a clear vision and direction for the organization and ensure that the quality management system is effectively implemented and maintained.
Engagement of people
Engagement of people includes providing training and resources to employees, promoting teamwork and collaboration, and encouraging employee involvement in the quality management system.
Process approach
Process approach means identifying and managing processes and their interactions, in order to achieve the desired results and continually improve performance.
Continuous Improvement
Continuous improvement includes setting objectives, measuring performance, analyzing data, and implementing actions to improve processes and products.
Evidence-based decision making
Gathering and analyzing data, using evidence to make informed decisions, and continually monitoring and measuring performance.
Relationship management
This includes understanding the needs and expectations of their stakeholders, developing mutually beneficial relationships, and collaborating to improve performance.
Risk-based thinking
The standard requires organizations to incorporate risk-based thinking into all aspects of their quality management system, from planning and design to implementation and monitoring.
IATF 16949
IATF 16949 is a globally recognized quality management standard for the automotive industry. It was developed by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF). The standard specifies the requirements for a quality management system that an organization in the automotive industry must meet to ensure that its products and services consistently meet customer and regulatory requirements.
IATF 16949:2016 is based on the ISO 9001:2015 standard and includes additional requirements specific to the automotive industry. These requirements cover a range of areas, including design and development, production, purchasing, and customer-specific requirements. The standard also emphasizes the use of core tools of quality management, such as Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Statistical Process Control (SPC), Measurement System Analysis (MSA), and Production Part Approval Process (PPAP).
IATF 16949:2016 is the latest version of the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) standard for quality management systems in the automotive industry. It was published in October 2016 and replaced the previous version of the standard, ISO/TS 16949:2009.The standard is designed to help organizations in the automotive supply chain to improve the quality of their products and services, reduce waste, and increase efficiency.
The key changes introduced in IATF 16949:2016 include:
-
Incorporation of risk-based thinking throughout the standard
-
Emphasis on leadership commitment and accountability
-
Enhanced requirements for supplier management and development
-
Increased focus on product safety
-
Greater emphasis on process effectiveness and efficiency
IATF 16949:2016 certification is a requirement for many automotive manufacturers and suppliers as a condition of doing business with them. The certification process involves a third-party audit of an organization's quality management system to ensure that it meets the requirements of the standard.
ISO 14001
Environmental policy
The ISO 14001 standard is a globally recognized standard for environmental management systems (EMS). It provides a framework for organizations to identify and manage their environmental impacts, and to continually improve their environmental performance. The foundation of the ISO 14001 standard is based on the following key principles:
The organization must establish and maintain an environmental policy that reflects its commitment to environmental protection, and provides a framework for setting and achieving environmental objectives and targets.
Planning
The organization must develop a systematic approach to environmental management that includes identifying its environmental impacts, defining objectives and targets, and establishing programs and procedures to achieve them.
Implementation
Engagement of people includes providing training and resources to employees, promoting teamwork and collaboration, and encouraging employee involvement in the quality management system.
Evaluation
The organization must evaluate its environmental performance, by monitoring and measuring its environmental impacts, and periodically reviewing its environmental management system to ensure that it is effective and continues to meet the organization's objectives.
Improvement
The organization must continually improve its environmental performance by taking corrective and preventive actions, and by identifying opportunities for improvement.
By adopting these principles, organizations can establish a framework for managing their environmental impacts, reducing risks and liabilities, and demonstrating their commitment to environmental protection to stakeholders. The ISO 14001 standard is flexible and can be adapted to the specific needs of different types of organizations, including those in manufacturing, services, and government sectors.
Integrated Management System
The integration of ISO 9001:2015/IATF 16949 and ISO 14001:2015 can be achieved by developing a single, integrated management system that incorporates the requirements of all three standards. By doing so, organizations can streamline their management processes and improve their efficiency, while also ensuring that they are meeting their commitments to quality and environmental protection.
Here are some key steps to integrating ISO 9001:2015/IATF 16949 and ISO 14001:2015:
Identify common elements: Review the requirements of both standards to identify common elements, such as document control, management review, and corrective action.
Develop a single integrated management system: This can be achieved by aligning policies, processes, and procedures, and by using a common structure and terminology.
Train employees: Ensure that employees are trained on the integrated management system, and understand the requirements.
Implement the system: Implement the integrated management system, and ensure that it is properly documented, communicated, and followed throughout the organization.
Monitor and review: Monitor and review the integrated management system to ensure that it is effective and meets the requirements. Conduct internal audits and management reviews to identify areas for improvement and opportunities for optimization.
By integrating ISO 9001:2015/IATF 16949 and ISO 14001:2015, organizations can benefit from improved efficiency, reduced multiplication of effort, and introduce a more holistic approach to managing quality and environmental risks. It also demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and corporate social responsibility, which can enhance an organization's reputation in the marketplace.
